65 Minetopia Besshi and the Tounaru Region, the “Machu Picchu of the East”
The ruins of Besshi Copper Mine, part of Japan’s modernization, and its surrounding mining town is at an altitude of 750 meters. The towering stone ruins form an astonishing landscape, referred to as the “Machu Picchu of the East”. In its foothills is Michi-no-Eki Minetopia Besshi, which features a restored mine railway and shops selling local specialties, as well as a sightseeing bus departing from the station where accompanying tour guides provide detailed commentary.
