42 Mirage Sunset and Kanyoto in Sukumo Bay
Called a “Daruma Sunset” in Japan because it looks like a distorted daruma (dharma doll), a mirage sunset happens when the sun sets on the cloudless horizon on a cold winter evening, an elusive phenomenon you can witness only if you’re lucky. The ultramarine sea sprawls before your eyes from the veranda of your hotel room, where you might catch a glimpse of the mirage sunset.
